Eliminating Tuberculosis in Northern Canada

Last week on World Tuberculosis Day, the Government of Canada committed to eliminating tuberculosis across Inuit Nunangat by 2030, and reducing active tuberculosis by at least half by 2025. Inuit Nunangat is comprised of the 53 communities in Nunavut, Inuvialuit, Nunavik, and Nunatsiavut – the four Inuit regions in Canada.

Currently, the rate of tuberculosis of Inuit in Inuit Nunagat is approximately 300 times than in the rest of Canada. Our Government will be investing $27.5 million over five years to support the work to eliminate tuberculosis in Inuit Nunangat, as part of a $509.5 million investment to improve public health programs in Inuit communities.
