Bill C-75: Changes to the Criminal Code and Youth Criminal Justice Act

Bill C-75: An Act to amend the Criminal Code, the Youth Criminal Justice Act and other Acts and to make consequential amendments to other Acts

Proposed changes include:

  • Increased sentences for repeat domestic violence offenders
  • Modernizing rules regarding release on bail – giving special attention to Indigenous and vulnerable populations, and making it more difficult for repeat domestic violence offenders to be released on bail
  • Those accused of historical sexual assault will be convicted based on the current laws and Criminal Code, not the laws that were in place at the time of the offence
  • Reducing delays within the youth criminal justice system
  • Lifting publication bans on cases where youth receive a sentence for a violent offence
