Canada’s Expanding Leadership in NATO

Canada is a proud founding member of NATO, and we are proud of the women and men of the Canadian Armed Forces for their work within NATO and around the world.

Expanding our leadership in NATO, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced that Canada will assume command of a new NATO training and capacity building mission in Iraq for one year, beginning in Fall 2018. It is our Government’s goal to help create long-term peace and stability in the region, and help improve democratic governance. Canada is also renewing its commitment to Operation REASSURANCE in Eastern and Central Europe for another four years, as well as increasing the number of troops deployed to Latvia for the operation.
